Keep your details private
Don’t trust everything you read
When you chat to someone online they can easily lie and tell you they are the same age, from the same city and love the same activities. You think you have found a perfect friend but the person on the other end of the keyboard is completely different!
Don’t meet up – Never meet up with someone you have only met online. If you must meet up then make sure you tell a trusted adult, take a trusted adult with you and meet in a public place with lots of people around.
Block random contacts
When using an instant messenger (like WhatsApp) you may find that a random person requests to be on your friend’s list. Always block people you do not recognise.
Keep details to a minimum
We at Children Protection Resource recommend that you do not include details about your hobbies, likes and dislikes in your profile information. Also, do not use a personal picture of yourself. Instead choose a picture of a pet, celebrity, default avatar or some other object. The more someone can find out about you the easier it is for them to worm their way into your trust
